There’s something about this stage, and this size, that has always been for me the real pinnacle of Independent engineering. The Indy boys had mostly solved their aluminum casting problems by 1984, and you don’t find the shrinkage holes and cold-separation flaws that could plague batches of the first three stages. And the big changes going on at the time in skateboard geometries and sizes were beginning to be reflected in wider, more stable truck designs. With the coming onset of the fat, bloated chunks of Stage 5 still a few years away, it was time to revel in the slim, elegant aesthetic of the true king of the Indy pantheon: Stage 4 161mm.
