Independent Truck Co – Stage II (2) – 131(Superwides) – 8 axle/131 mm hanger. Over hundreds of years ancient Rome unlocked the puzzle of the arch, adding longevity to their structures that can survive to this day. It only took Independent about 6 or 7. As the feeble right angles of the Stage 1 pivot-arm morphed into the brawny arcuate lines of Stage 4 & 5, we are left with extinct stumps in the Indy evolutionary tree (Stage 2 & 3). Shuffling into the 1980′s, and with pig decks getting fatter & fatter, Indy probably thought even this size (“Superwides”) would one day become obsolete. These living fossils are in clean, skate able condition although the late 80′s bushings could use an update. Old-school 2.5 inch bolt hole width – will not fit most’new school’ deck bolt patterns (2.125). Original bushings and pivot cups replaced in late 1980′s with black 94a Hard Independent gear. The elegant lines of the Stage 4 design would cede to the muscular pivot-bar wings of Stage 5 in a few short years, but in the early 80′s these Art Deco lines were the gold-standard for the increasingly fat & curvy pig decks being produced. Independent was just learning how to be an industry leader when these were cast, the shrinkage holes and cold-separation casting flaws were in the past. The reliable, precise turning now married with bomb-proof durability. Old-school 2.5 inch bolt hole width – and will not fit most’new school’ deck bolt patterns (2.125). There’s something about this stage, and this size, that has always been for me the real pinnacle of Independent engineering. The Indy boys had mostly solved their aluminum casting problems by 1984, and you don’t find the shrinkage holes and cold-separation flaws that could plague batches of the first three stages. And the big changes going on at the time in skateboard geometries and sizes were beginning to be reflected in wider, more stable truck designs. With the coming onset of the fat, bloated chunks of Stage 5 still a few years away, it was time to revel in the slim, elegant aesthetic of the true king of the Indy pantheon: Stage 4 161mm. Independent Truck Company – Stage IV(4) – 8.75 axles/151mm hangers. A testament to the durability of a legendary stage. As you can see, these were used for about 2 weeks before being abandoned to the garage back in the mid-80′s. The salt-air of south Florida gently burnishing the patina to a rich gun-metal grey for damn near 40 years is lovely, the crispy concrete set of the urethane bushings not so much. New 90a Independent medium orange bushings are included to swap out the originals, and get out there carving lines like the legends used to. Bushings and new black pivot cups, stock kingpin and nuts, and 8 speed rings. The aluminum bushing brackets are 80′s replacements, judging by weathering. Old school 2.5 inch bolt hole width – will not fit most’new school’ decks. Preservation-quality cleaning, and ready for your collection or next throwback shaped deck.
